'TinyRhythm'
Multichannel Midi-Triggerinterface with onboard digital drumsynth
Pure analog percussion
<< back to Tiny Rhythm overview
After the first 3 modules BD, Sid-Snare and the HH i was a bit unsure about the harsh sound of this thing. On the route of learning from others and hiw they realized things that went out great i turned my eye on rebuilding some pure analogue percussion units of the past: the beloved tr808 clave and the very very simple CR5000-Clave i already modded on the original cr5000 i sold some time ago.
I also love the 808-RIM and the 909-RIM. Well the 909 is to rebuilt much easier with a bipolar PSU i dont have on this project. And the 808-rim is tied to the 808-clave because they use the same opAmps. So the 808-rim was the winner. But i was the loser. Dont exactly know why but i couldnt get the rim to sound like the 808-rim. Maybe its because the 808 also has a bipolar powersupply. You can overcome this by feeding the plus-input of the opamps with half of youe unipolar powersupply but that all has to be calibrated and leed to additional trouble.
And i DEFINATELY wanted my clave to allow tuning. I guess the 808-rim only works with a special frequencycombination of the 2 clave-sounds, the 808-clave consists of. '2 clave sounds?' you might ask. Yes it has 2. One is even lengthened in decay by a controlled feedback. The Clave occupies 3 opamps.
Wenn anyway, the clave turned out VERY cool with nice tuning on both claveparts. The rim didnt work, i feede it with a noise of the tiny13 and now it sounds like a weak snare - we'll see if this can be useful when making usic with this Drumsynth.
And the CR-Clave also didnt have this noisy 'tak' of the original sound, maybe they use special transistors - i dont know ... but my standard-parts-cr5000-rim also sounds quite cool. It has the character of these very short, electrnic percussion 'bek' sounds. And its tunable in a wide range.
Didnt come out perfect but its ok :)
